The key to any successful winter outing is dressing appropriately. For babies and toddlers, this means layers, layers, and more layers. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat at bay, add an insulating middle layer, and top it off with a waterproof outer layer to fend off snow and rain. Don't overlook the essentials: warm hats, gloves, and waterproof boots are must-haves to keep your little explorer toasty from head to toe.

Base Layer

The initial and crucial layer to prioritize in terms of fabric selection is the base layer. IT ought to have a snug fit and excellent moisture-wicking properties, with key emphasis on avoiding cotton. Our favorite is wool but for a more budget-friendly alternative that isn't cotton, consider bamboo, silk, polyester, or other synthetic materials.

Middle Layer

Fleece is a favorite of ours because it effectively retains warmth and doesn't absorb moisture. Even if it gets wet, you won't feel the dampness. It is easy to move in and doesn't add unnecessary bulk to your attire. In extremely cold conditions, opting for a thicker insulating layer, such as a down or synthetic jacket or vest, or even down pants, can be beneficial.

For infants, a puffy down bunting proves particularly helpful, as babies typically aren't actively running around and getting wet.

Outer Layer

The outer layer should be of high quality, featuring a waterproof and windproof shell-like fabric for optimal protection. It's crucial that the outer layer is generously sized to accommodate comfortable layers underneath without introducing excessive bulk, and it should facilitate easy movement.

Look for an outer layer that strategically incorporates a bit of insulation where necessary, utilizing thin and flexible fabric to shield you from the elements. A puffy (down) coat is a viable option, provided the weather isn't excessively wet.

Hands

When it comes to the little ones, my go-to choice is mittens. They're a breeze to slip on, and I believe they do wonders in keeping those tiny fingers extra cozy. Mittens prove perfect for all kinds of winter adventures - be it sledding, crafting snow angels, hiking, or just frolicking around in the chilly outdoors.

Opt for mittens or gloves with a long cuff for that bonus wrist coverage, and a drawstring to keep the cold and snow out. Make sure they are waterproof and fit nice and snug.

Having hand warmers you can tuck inside adds an extra layer of toasty comfort.

Head

Make sure your little one wears a hat, especially if its wet or colder than 40 degrees. If your child doesn't love hats, keeping a hood on serves as a great alternative. Opt for wool, fleece, or synthetic blended hats; they are excellent choices for keeping your child warm.

On windy or particularly chilly days, we highly recommend neck gaiters. They offer coverage for necks, chins, and faces, providing a shield against biting winds. They also fit seamlessly under hats, hoods, and helmets. Wool or fleece options are our personal favorites.

Feet

Begin with socks. To ensure your toddler's feet stay warm and dry, opt for wool socks. When it comes to footwear, choose a waterproof option to fend off snow, ice, and water. Look for boots with closures such as velcro and secure lacing to prevent snow from entering. Select boots with added warmth, such as faux-fur lining, and consider soles with enhanced grip, especially if you reside in a region where ice and snow can pose walking challenges.

Keeping infant feet warm is simpler. Before they start walking, layer fleece and wool under their bunting.

If you're carrying your toddler in a pack, take breaks to maintain circulation in their feet.

More Tips to Stay Warm:

  • Enjoy warm beverages such as tea or hot chocolate

  • Stay active and engaged in play

  • Utilize hand and feet warmers

  • Seek warmth by the fire

  • Bring hot soup with you on your adventure
